This workshop is aimed specifically at artists and photographers who wish to learn to mix traditional and digital media. Topics covered will include sketching and painting in both traditional and digital media, from still life, a portrait model and from photographic reference, and combining them both in a creative process that extends beyond the computer. The workshop includes printing on different substrates and applying acrylic paint, and other media, onto the digital prints.

Using images you capture at the Gatsby Summer Afternoon, a magnificent event that takes place at the Dunsmuir Estate in Oakland, California, you will learn impressionist painting techniques, on and off the computer, capturing the atmosphere, light, movement, mood and music of the beautiful vintage event. Beyond just painting, the week includes a Special Impressionist City Tour for you and your guests, swing dance lessons from Angie Major, the 2007 Miss Art Deco, and a fully catered elegant Champagne Picnic Luncheon at the Gatsby Summer Afternoon event. This workshop will be the perfect opportunity to bring your spouse or significant other along for a fantastic week in San Francisco at the best time of year to be here, in the heart of the Indian Summer.
When you join in one of my classes you are immersing yourself in a complete creative experience. You will not only learn to master the phenomenal digital painting tools of Corel Painter with the Wacom tablet, but you will also be inspired and empowered creatively at every level. Whilst keeping my seminars and workshops lively and fun, I share detailed insights into my artistic process, workflow organization, painting techniques, and cross-media mixing. My focus is on doing. My students work on hands-on projects every day of class. By keeping my class sizes small I ensure everyone enjoys one-on-one assistance and consultation. Small class size also allows me to adapt the experience for each student to suit their individual needs and interests. Whether you wish to develop a new professional skill you can apply profitably in your business, and / or you wish to explore and expand your personal artistic self-expression, you will enjoy these classes and find them transformational.
Which Resources and Materials?
Whatever level of Painter user you are, you will definitely benefit from joining my new online education center www.PaintboxJ.com. In PaintboxJ you will find new video tutorials on Corel Painter 11 added monthly, and much more. The fastest way I can help you with Painter is for you join one of my in-person workshops. In terms of my instructional books and DVDs, I recommend starting off with my book, Painter X Creativity: Digital Artist's Handbook, and introductory DVD, Learning Corel Painter X with Jeremy Sutton. The book is a great complement to all my other materials and also serves as the required text book for all my classes. The book goes deeper and broader than any DVD. It also provides convenient step lists for many of the techniques shared on the DVDs. The Learning Corel Painter X DVD gives you a good overview of the software.
Once you are familiar with the basics then I recommend the more advanced DVD sets, How to Paint from Photographs Using Corel Painter X
and Expanding Your Creativity with Jeremy Sutton - The Art of Collage Portraiture. Both these more advanced DVD sets take you through real-life case studies from beginning to end, sharing my work-flow, organizational systems, creative process, decision-making strategies, techniques and tools, plus including extensive extra brushes, art materials, tutorial images and more. In both DVDs I show how I apply physical paint onto my prints.
The interface has not changed significantly between Painter X and Painter 11 so you can easily apply the lessons from all my earlier materials when using Corel Painter 11. Likewise my PaintboxJ Painter 11 tutorials can all be easily applied in earlier versions of Painter. I do strongly recommend upgrading to Painter 11 if you currently have an earlier version. The newest Painter is the best yet. It is significantly faster than earlier versions and includes a whole new class of wonderful brushes (the Hard Media brushes).
